Department Summary


The Department of Physics and Astronomy consists of faculty, undergrads and graduate students, academic researchers, scientists, staff and postdocs. Our department is located in Knudsen Hall, the Physics & Astronomy Buildings, the Planetarium (located in the Math Sciences Building) and a portion of Kaplan Hall (Division Mechanical Shop) totaling approximately 155,000+ square feet.

Position Summary



The Department of Physics & Astronomy is in search of a R&D Engineer 2 to support our IR Lab and the astrophysics laboratory on the GAPS and VERITAS projects. This is a full-time position eligible for full benefits with the potential to be hybrid. Qualifications



  • Knowledge of software tools: Linux, C/C++, Rust, Python, SQL, JavaScript, HTML/CSS. (Required)
  • Knowledge of design software: Altium, Xilinx Vivado, SolidWorks, Git, Docker. (Required)
  • Experience in analog and digital printed circuit board (PCB) design, parts, fabrication and repair. (Required)
  • Experience with large RAID systems (hardware, network, monitoring). (Required)
  • Effective written and communication skills; ability to provide concise, logical documentation and reports at a steady cadence. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. (Required)
  • Ability to work effectively in team environment, with students, staff, faculty, collaborators, and commercial vendors. (Required)


Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations



  • Bachelor's Degree Physics, Astronomy or Engineering and/or equivalent experience/training. (Required)


Special Conditions for Employment



  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • 5% Engineer will travel to team meetings in the U.S. to work with collaborators and to present designs and test results.
  • 5% Engineer will travel to Keck Observatory and possibly other UC Observatories facilities for instrument integration and servicing. Engineer may also travel to conferences to present development results.
