The Department of Pathology at Stanford Medicine seeks a full-time physician, an outstanding MD or MD/PhD with expertise in blood banking and transfusion medicine, with emphasis on providing medical direction of blood center activities, for appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the University Medical Line or Clinician Educator Line, with rank based on years of relevant experience. Commensurate with rank, the candidate will serve as Assistant, Associate or Co-Director of Clinical Services at the Stanford Blood Center (SBC). The candidate must be board eligible or board certified in Clinical Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology or related field (e.g. Internal Medicine, Hematology, Pediatrics) and board eligible or board certified in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine with a preference for applicants with a minimum of one year experience in Blood Banking or Transfusion Medicine.

The Stanford Blood Center collects approximately 50,000 red cells and 20,000 plateletpheresis components annually, utilizing manual and automated collection technologies. It performs all required blood donor testing onsite, while also performing testing for blood centers from across the nation. The Stanford Blood Center is the primary supplier for multiple community hospitals including Stanford Health Care, Stanford Medicine Children's Healthcare, Stanford Healthcare Tri-Valley, and the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center. It is also the secondary supplier to numerous other local hospitals, such as Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. The Stanford Blood Center provides support for clinical, translational and basic science research activities, with rapid growth in white cell collections to support cellular therapy development.

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate is to provide medical oversight for policies and procedures at the Stanford Blood Center. The individual will ensure that the Stanford Blood Center policies and procedures support the complex needs of the patient populations, while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulations and standards. The individual will also share responsibilities for medical consultations and for medical student, resident and fellow training activities in blood banking and transfusion medicine. The individual may provide medical cross coverage for the Transfusion Service at Stanford Hospital, which provides transfusion and apheresis support for both adult and pediatric patients. The individual will be encouraged to participate in clinical research projects in blood banking and transfusion medicine, as well as key regional and national blood bank and industry meetings.

Academic rank and line will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Successful candidates will join the faculty in the Department of Pathology, which currently includes a Nobel laureate, multiple members of the National Academies, and many other investigators with national and international distinctions. In conjunction with its outstanding research program, the Department of Pathology is responsible annually for over 20 million laboratory tests and 100,000 anatomic pathology specimens, and educates outstanding graduate students, residents and fellows.

The expected based pay range for this position is:

Assistant Professor: $264,000 – $282,000
Associate Professor: $313,000 – $331,000
Professor: $373,000 – $385,000

This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It does not include all components of the School of Medicine's faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs.
