Are you passionate about disability rights and accessibility in National Parks and public lands? Do you identify as having a disability yourself? Work with us and help increase access to the outdoors for everyone. Our health, our planet, and our collective future rely on diversity—in thought, ability, experience, and ideas. That's why we need YOU. Become a Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) intern and help make the outdoors more accessible for all!
Jimmy Carter National Historical Park Intern:
The Jimmy Carter National Historical Park Education Department in partnership with a resident teacher from the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) seeks to inspire the next generation of Americans through on-site field trips and in-classroom experiences. We provide curriculum-based physical and digital resources to teachers around the country to meet their goals of providing their students with a quality education grounded in emotional and humanitarian learning.
Over the last two decades, the Jimmy Carter NHP and GADOE created an entire suite of free online educational resources available to students and teachers. Most of these items are hosted on a non-governmental website. The park is now pulling over all of those resources to the NPS website as a centralized database for students and teachers to have easy access. With the migration of these resources to the NPS website, all of the documents now require Digital Accessibility remediation for students and teachers needing content in alternative formats to access. Our education staff is small and accessibility remediation of past content will take a long time without a dedicated staff member to complete the task. With a YES Intern's help, we could have the content fully accessible by the 2023/2024 School Year and provide a benefit to the education community across the nation.
The YES Intern will work with the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park and Georgia Department of Education to ensure online educational resources for teachers and students are digitally accessible to all. The intern will be given in-depth training on digital media accessibility by experts on park staff. Using these new skills, the intern will work with previously developed resources to remediate all accessibility issues. This will include work on Social Media content, PDFs, video presentations, photographs, and other files. There may also be opportunities to assist with school field trips, in-classroom programs, or livestreamed education programs that require expert knowledge on accessibility.
