Job Summary An Oil and Gas Geology Technician supports scientists and engineers in the exploration, extraction, and analysis of natural resources such as oil and gas. This role involves both fieldwork and office-based tasks, including collecting geological samples, analyzing data, maintaining equipment, and preparing reports. Technicians often work in remote locations and under varying environmental conditions.

 

Essential Functions

  • Collect and analyze geological samples (rock, soil, mud) to determine resource content and characteristics.
  • Use advanced tools such as seismic equipment, ground-penetrating radar, and GIS software for data collection and analysis.
  • Conduct scientific tests on samples to identify hydrocarbons or other valuable resources.
  • Record, compile, and interpret test results using computer modeling and mapping software.
  • Prepare detailed reports, logs, maps, and other documentation for use by geologists and engineers.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and inspect laboratory and field equipment.
  • Assist in determining reservoir locations, sizes, and characteristics of oil and gas reserves.
  • Collaborate with environmental scientists to assess the environmental impact of drilling activities.
 

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Strong knowledge of geological principles and local geological features in Colorado.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS), mapping tools, and analytical/scientific software (e.g., IHS Petra).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities to interpret data accurately.
  • Strong communication skills for report writing and collaboration with teams.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in remote or challenging environments.
  • Attention to detail and excellent time management skills
 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of an Associates degree in geology, geoscience, petroleum technology, engineering technology, or related field.  Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 5+ Years of experience in oil and gas geology.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and remote locations.

  • May require occasional lifting of heavy objects.
  • The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
