Position Overview

The Illinois School for the Visually Impaired is seeking to hire a Chief Engineer to perform responsible administrative work in the direction of staff and students engaged in maintenance functions, including trades, power plant operations, grounds, security, transportation, and contractors. In addition, the Chief Engineer will conduct campus and physical plant facility tours regularly to assess the need for repair, maintenance, and replacement and/or requisitions and develop, direct, and oversee contracted projects, repair and maintenance projects and capital development projects at the school.

Essential Functions

• Serves as Chief Engineer at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI).
• Conducts campus and physical plant facility tours regularly to assess the need for repair, maintenance, and replacement and/or requisitions.
• Follows all procurement policies and communicates with the business office (or team) to ensure that all projects are completed in a timely manner and within budget.
• Serves as designated lead worker to lower-level staff.
• Utilizes computer to complete forms and prepares reports, including but not limited to the preparation of annual scope statements, Five- and Seven-year plans for Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI), annual Repair and Maintenance Requests, Monthly Chief Engineer Reports to central office, timekeeping records, internal work plans and reports, etc.
• Serves as compliance coordinator for engineering issues as they pertain to appropriate standards – State Fire Codes, Public Health, etc. to address safety problems through training and creating/updating policies and procedures.
• Travels to attend meetings on and off campus, representing the school relating to School Safety and Threat Assessment.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
• Requires seven (7) years of experience in the operation of a commercial or institutional power plant OR as a skilled craftsman in the mechanical or building trades.
• Requires the possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under USEPA, Section 608 rules.

Preferred Qualifications

• Seven (7) years of professional experience as a commercially licensed skilled craftsman at the journeyman level in the mechanical or building trades.
• Five (5) years of professional experience utilizing the principles, practices and methods used in operating high-pressure, gas or oil-fired boilers and appurtenances.
• Five (5) years of professional experience in steam engineering, electrical generation, and distribution.
• Five (5) years of professional experience making rounds and observing the operation of all equipment, systems, generators, and other machinery.
• Five (5) years of professional experience working with the various chemicals used in boiler systems and other closed systems.
• Five (5) years of professional experience utilizing the underlying principles of water and sewage treatment.

Conditions of Employment

• Requires the ability to perform the physical functions and tasks associated with engineering including but not limited to overhead work, ladder climbing, squatting, kneeling, bending, and walking.
• Requires the ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs. independently and up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
• Requires the ability to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.
• Requires the ability to serve on an on-call basis.
• Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers and agency supplied material/equipment (i.e. cell phone, etc.).
• Requires a valid appropriate driver’s license and the ability to travel.
• Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
• Requires the ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois law.
• Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
• Upon employment, employee will be subject to Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test.
